Yamaha Motor Corporation, USA has issued a recall notice through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration regarding certain 2008-2011 WR250X and 2008-2015 WR250R motorcycles. According to the notice, “the insulation on the stator coil, a component of the alternator, may become damaged and short circuit due to insufficient heat resistance.” There are 12,721 potentially affected units included in the recall.
The WR250X motorcycles were manufactured from June 1, 2008 through June 1, 2011 while the affected WR250R motorcycles were manufactured from June 1, 2008 through June 1, 2015.
According to the Defect Notice submitted to the NHTSA on July 13, 2015, “low battery voltage could then cause loss of speedometer function and the engine could stall and be unable to be restarted, which could result in a crash.”
Yamaha is implementing a Factory Modification Campaign to address the issue, and “affected units must have the stator coil replaced with a new one with sufficient heat resistance.” Yamaha dealers will provide the updated stator coil free of charge.
